Family time in Livigno: tips from a Livigno family

What to do with the children in Livigno in winter

The web is full of sites talking about winter activities for families in Livigno, but the majority is just copy and paste articles rather than real-life experience. If you are looking for advice on how to spend a family holiday in Livigno, it is best to ask a real family who live in Livigno all year round and know the various attractions and experiences having tried them for themselves. And who better than us at Carpe Diem, who run a family hotel and restaurant in the centre of Livigno? These are our recommendations.

Winter activities for children and families in Livigno

Skiing or learning to ski in Livigno

The simplest thing to do in Livigno is what everyone does: ski. Livigno is a skiers’ paradise because the ski season lasts from autumn until well into the spring, there is always snow and we have hundreds of kilometres of pistes at our disposal. For young skiers, too, Livigno has so much to offer. The gentle teaching slopes in the centre, served by handy drag lifts, are ideal for beginners, children and teenagers who want to ski on easy, safe runs. They are also perfect for parents, who can enjoy watching from the bottom of the piste while soaking up the sun in total relaxation, just a stone’s throw from the shopping streets. For children who want to learn to ski, the Livigno ski schools offer fantastic instructors (also for children and teenagers from other countries) ready to share the secrets and teach the technique of this wonderful sport in ski lessons accessible to everyone.

The Carpe Diem family hotel, located right in the middle of Livigno, has the advantage of overlooking the pistes, the teaching areas and the ski school of the Minilift and Campo Scuola lift facilities, so you can step out of the hotel straight onto the piste. What could be handier?

Other winter activities: sledging, snowshoeing, snow tubing and ice skating

There is more to Livigno than skiing. For little people, non-skiers and those who just fancy trying something different, there is a really wide choice. Livigno offers so many winter activities for children: you can throw yourself down the snowy mountain slopes in an exciting sledge or toboggan ride, embark on snowy excursions of varying difficulty on the snowshoeing trails or the beaten snowy walking paths along the valley floor, hire tubes and fat bikes to try new ways of sliding and riding on the snow, or even don a pair of skates and glide on the ice of Livigno’s Ice Arena, with well-heated stands for spectators.

Livigno, the snowy playground

What activity do children love best? Playing. And why not do it in the snow? No sooner said than done. In Livigno in winter, the play parks are covered with snow and even more fun. The local children particularly love the play areas near the Parish Church of Santa Maria and on the cycle and pedestrian path near the bottom station of the Mottolino cable car, a few minutes’ walk from the town centre. Outside the hotel Carpe Diem is the Kinder Club Lupigno, a large space featuring play equipment, trampolines and attractions for children, which overlooks the central ski slopes and offers a childminding service.

Swimming pool or water park? Livigno’s Aquagranda

Going to the swimming pool in Livigno in the middle of winter might seem paradoxical, but this is actually one of the most popular activities among children of all ages. Perhaps because Livigno’s pool is nothing like the ones we are used to and more like a water amusement park. We are talking about Aquagranda, whose Slide&Fun area offers waterslides, bouncy castles, inflatables and pools for large and small as well as baby splash pools, while parents can enjoy some well-earned relaxation on the loungers and in the saunas, hydromassage tubs and Turkish bath.

Discovering nature and animals in Livigno

For many children, a holiday in Livigno is a unique opportunity to experience the mountains first-hand, against the incomparable Alpine backdrop of the Upper Valtellina. In this setting, you can take your little ones on a discovery of the natural wonders that make Livigno a truly magical place, from hiking through the unpolluted valleys to the thousand secrets of the snowy woodlands and the most fascinating and intriguing inhabitants of the mountains: animals. Marmots, roe deer, chamois and red deer are elusive, but in the town it is easy to spot cows, calves, goats, horses and even huskies, llamas and alpacas. You can also visit a Livigno cowshed and try milking the cows and feeding milk to the calves. Ask us for full information at the hotel reception.
